I’ve noticed a slight Behavioral Change in my Attitude towards Eminence Concerts. Not a bad change I mean. The past few concerts I had instantly pushed myself into going before i had even read what they were playing. I believe that now I have either Become a Hopeless fanboy, or some sort of one tracked robot.
My belief and I've talked with even a crew/staff member about this, That I'm actually more interested in coming to hear the Symphony play rather than the content. Of course what they play is a Definite Perk If I know it. But I'm just having fun enjoying the music as of late. With the Sydney ANIF2007 SGE, I'm not a strong gamer and I've only recognized about 5 or so songs from the entire night. And yet I enjoyed myself immensely besides falling on my face in front of half the audience and fumbling around with signatures and even dropping my Passion CD case and cracking. That and I noticed Katamari was the only thing Not played that was on that fanposter *Whistle*
But yes I wish to know if anyone else feels the same way as I do? Having Eminence as a preferred band you loyally attend rather than just for the music?
Or I’m just that Sad of a fanboy… |

What you said you shouldn't be ashamed of.
The content more or less just shows what the Orchestra is capable of. The focus of Eminence is to show skills, and if by playing good content happens to coincidentally show that, then so be it!
Whether anyone sees which of the two is better, either the just judging on the content or anything else besides content, is just a matter of perspectives =)
Im glad you thoroughly enjoyed yourself, and Im sure the rest of the staff and crew would hope so too! |

Hi!
Blatant praise below -- be warned!
I'm new to the forums (I read them now and then) but have been attending Eminence concerts since the '04 Uematsu/Hisaishi performance. Flaydramon, I empathise with you completely. It's not just that it's VGM live or even orchestral -- it's Eminence. The locals made good, I guess -- a pretty Australian attitude. I've also been following the competition and claim *vehemently* that Eminence is the big dog in that arena. Maybe it's the lack of fanboy/girl attitude in the audience: this year's performance was the first I've cheered at, and it was 'Gnosis' nailed, perfected and elevated. It deserved every cheer. If you watch youtubes of those-other-concerts, it feels more like a gaming convention or nerds-night-out en masse. Not saying we're not nerds but when it comes to A Night In Fantasia, we're appreciaters of the quality of the music (both in composition and performance) above mere gamers who want to hear their favourite themes live.
If you compare the playlists, Eminence has taken -so- many risks and they almost always pay off in a huge way. They haven't stuck to the formulaic delivery of Your-Favourite-Game-Scenes. Often we haven't even played the games they select -- I went out and bought 'The Unsung War' the day after I heard it at '05. Sometimes the games aren't even out here yet (Legendia, Odin Sphere and their early performances of FFXII)...but it's still darn good music. I don't know how many people in the audience understood that 'Gnosis' was the destruction of the Woglinde at the hands of an intangible, deadly alien invasion...but I do know how many were blown away by Eminence's performance of it.
So yeah, I'll be attending the 'competition' when it's in town and I'm sure I'll enjoy it because of the themes, but I won't look at the performers and say to myself 'There's Hiroaki Yura kickin' butt' or 'Man, Ayako's totally into it!'...and I definitely won't be lining up to get any of the musicians to sign this poster or that cd.
The competition knows how preach to the choir; Eminence, in my experience, sings songs even some of us diehard 'church-goers' have never heard, and brings the beauty of the hymns to those who thought church was all button-mashing and yelling at a screen.
I feel that we're in a golden age right now, VGM wise: composers who have for years toiled over limited hardware and creative constraints (such as Shimomura-san's effort to make the music for KH2 long enough for the credit roll) are getting the recognition they've long deserved; what started with a guest or two has turned into a tumult of professional presence. I have friends in Japan who are absolutely drooling in envy at what we Sydney dwellers get multiple times a year. I've even been fortunate enough to attend a rare Symphonic performance in Nagoya and...well, let's just say the Japanese game/anime markets might be surprisingly ignorant to their own home-grown talent regarding composers.
It is a blessing that Eminence is not.
...Sorry for the long post, but I've been silent about my Eminence-adulation (except among close friends) and while I'm sure Eminence make mistakes, I didn't hear a single one this year. It was also the first standing ovation I've seen them receive (in Sydney)...so I figured it about time to speak up.
PS. I'm over OWA. Sorry Melbourne people -- I hope you get it next time. I've heard it live three times now and it's always great...but it's been almost ten years since I first gave Sephiroth Omnislash-whatfor. Besides, the competition-performances virtually rely on its associative power; Eminence is beyond needing that, I think.
PSS (added afterthought). I can't think of any other video game music symphony/orchestra that actually -responds- to suggestions on their forums by the fans. I've been reading some older posts and people here have been calling for Mitsuda, for Shimomura for quite some time...and amazingly, we got both in spades. That sort of rapport between performers and audience is absolutely priceless. I won't post any requests though -- and I think that's my final accolade to them: I trust that whatever they'll play will be great...and sometimes, made great. |

Thank you for your comments, it is people like you I work so hard for, the fans that simply love this music. Were it not for our group Australia would (up until this point) not have had video game and anime music performed live in symphony, so I put in everything I can to have it continue.
To think that our country with it's comparatively low population to countries like the United States and Japan has such large scale concerts is pretty cool, and I am always very happy to see so many people come to our performances. It's great to know our work is appreciated, and even better to know that we are providing something not only important to fans, but something that would otherwise not exist.
Thank you for standing by us, it is my hope that we continue to provide something fresh and exciting each time, and also that more and more people realise not only is video game and anime music far more brilliant than many believe, but moreover so the symphonic legacy can carry on. |

Happy to be of service xP Still wish i can join the eminence cast in some way like catering for staff or guests or something xD *is hospitality geek*
But yeah I do appreciate the obvious hard work that has been brought into each performance and still never cease to be amazed... And it will probably be a drug soon where I thrive on something a year :3
I heart Eminence. </end fanboyism> |
