hey man my desktop computer is like 4 or 5 years old , replaced a blown capacitor, replaced the blown power supply etc, and still have a 10 year old keyboard on it, talking about being tight on money spending (not that i use it to play many games anyway) Razz, anyway here's the specs

AMD 800 Mhz
128 + 256 + 512 SDRAM 133
some nvidia 32 MB AGP video card
motherboard.... Asus A7V or somethin
Pioneer 8X dvd burner single layer
sound blaster live value
speaker.... some creative speaker
big fat 17" CRT monitor <== should i change to LCD?
17 + 17 + 120 GB harddisk
100 mbps netgear ethernet card <== old Mobo dun have built-in LAN
USB 2.0 Card <== same reason, none on Mobo
Firewire card <== same reason, none on Mobo

you can see some major surgery already on this comp, but surprisingly this comp is still really good for non-gaming purposes. BTW no more floppy drive hehe (for those of you who remember carrying 3 different floppy disks to school for projects Razz) thank goodness to USB pen drive!!!

is this a thread just for you to show off your specs? XD

i got a laptop, specs (shocking laptop)

HP Compaq Presario 2500
2.8GHz Processing
512Mb RAM
8Mb - 128Mb intergrated graphic card, RADEON IGP 345M - 15inch monitor.
3x USB 1.1 ports (aaargh so slooow)
Sony earphones for sound =P (Conexant AMC Audio) - it does have speakers.
40Gb Harddisk
22Mb D-Link airplus PCI card wireless thingy
TOSHIBA CD-R48x. DVD read only.
4 mini fans because it over heats a lot ( i swear any hotter you can start frying eggs on it)
integrated 56k modem (not used)
100Mb network card (not used)
supervideo port
infrared thing.
printer port
monitor on screen port
some other bits which i have no idea what they are.

If it had a better graphic card, more ram and no ridiculous heat build up - it would be quite good for gaming, but i don't play much games anymore though. everything else works beautifully though.

Good for work and other stuff =D, works well with games that are not graphic intesive.

netgear and lynksis are quite ok, although for now i'm using a lynksis that acts as a switch and router (wired and wireless), pretty good you can use quite a few security features available on it. Not sure about netgear thought, their setting up is pretty straight forward too.

The strong point lynksis has is it's owned by CISCO which owns like 60% of market for high-end routers in the world, so in theory some of the technologies should be available in lynksis routers but i doubt it, it's just marketing stuff

i would recommend www.whirlpool.net.au got forums wher e you can find tons of infos and opinions from different people.

MAC? sometimes i prefer their UI, probably for the sake of difference, not that they make me work more efficient or anything like that

cooking egg with a cpu,, hmmm yummy!

actually if u r going to use AMD then i think u can do that

for intel, i think the latest cpus have this technology where if the cooling system fails, they'll be able to slow down really quickly and keep the temperature @ around 37, way below 200 degrees that cpus usually operate when there is no cooling system

Actually, the AMD cpus are a lot cooler than the Intels.

The tech you speak of is called speedstep for intel cpus and cool 'n' quiet for AMD.

There is no way cpus run at 200 degrees, unless you're talking farenheit.

My amd cpu stays constantly around 32, unless it is under a heavy load.

Thats depends on how good your cooling system are.

APC magazine had an article on it.... i think the pentium 4 (INTEL) heated up more.. maybe it was amd.......

It most definately is the latest Intel Pentium 4. The Prescott core runs very hot. I'm not talking about their dual cores, but their single core cpus.

I spent $60 on my cpu heatsink, its literally silent. Very Happy

but if the heatsink is silent, it's good coz it's quite, but then wouldn't be a compromise to the cooling effect? i wouldn't mind one that is a bit noisy but guaranteed in cooling

hmmm the apc one i think was an intel, they literally made it hot enough to cook an egg on the cpu and somebody ate it eewwww!!!

i reckon it's stupid and ironic that the dual core needs two things running at time to make it run 'faster' or normally.....

what do you mean? it's not always faster that matters, it's how many computer operations can you do in 1 go. Supercomputers se like 15000 cpus to perform very complex calculations

can't really explain why this is the case ask any comp scientists out there Razz
