i reckon it dos matter whether it's fast or not...... that's why they're being upgraded regularly.....

I dont think you read correctly to what transistor just said, a single core CPU can only go so higher, before it heats up. Obiviously the faster something is, the more heat it generates out...

And if anyone has studied physics/chemistry in here, you'd know that the higher the head, the less amount of power flows through the circuits, therefore you'd can only process at such speeds. Think of it as the log graphs, rate of change just slows down

thats how the dual cores came about, or as transistor also pointed out, how its a good idea to simultaneously run n-amounts of CPUs together to cut down operation time, and also dispersing the amount of work being performed as well as heat

Distributing workload, is something everyone can expect in the future and its already happening,

ever heard of the 64bit CPUs? thats another distributive design in the CPUs nowadays.

AMD Vs Intel

AMD is a relatively good cpu if you're a hardcore gamer, it processes things well...but..

when it comes to the Intel, although it poors very crap in the gaming area, it does well than the AMD in application based usages.

The AMD does have a tendancy to heat up quickly compared to the Intel, but

For all you hardcore overclockers out there, i seriously dont recommend it...

The retail Intel heatsink is just designed so well. Not only does it have a massive amount of surface area to draw away the heat a P4 produces (highly clocked P4's can generate close to what high end AMD CPU's do), it also acts as a huge EMI shield! They're so good that even enthusiasts are using them to cool their overclocked processors! Another nice thing is just how quiet the fan is. In an enclosed case it's often almost impossible to hear it.

Another point to keep in mind is how fragile the AMD CPU is. When's the last time you heard of someone that killed a P4 or P3 with heat? Or maybe having a heatsink crush the core? Now think about the horror stories you've heard about from AMD based processors...

yeah.... but for 733t gamers only who use SLI, the problem is that there is no need for those especially for us who do not even require high spec, i mean word processing, websurfing, listening to music. Even a pentium mmx is enough Razz if u are really short of cash

if not sub 1k dollars computers anywhere will do fine

i still dun have LCD Crying or Very sad

There are next to no stories these days about cores being crushed. All cpus have an integrated heat spreader nowadays that also minimises the possiblity of a core being crushed.

Most applications availalbe to the consumer are single threaded - processes occur one after another, in a linear fashion. Multi threaded applications are much more complex to write. Multi core cpus/multi cpu systems can take advantage of such applications - processes are offloaded to different cores.

This is how distributed computing works - folding@home.

Regarding the AMD vs Intel.
All i've got to say is the opteron completely outlclasses the xeon. If you want to talk about amd vs intel regarding processing power. Opterons for server applications all the way.
Note that intel declined amd's offer to a benchmarking competition. Various websites carried out their own testing with the opteron the clear winner.

so really ccjc, what is ur point.

nevertheless, even if it's based on how many jobs a computer can do simulataneously or at a time, it sitll matters on how fast it is, unless the speed depends on the number of jobs at a time, which would mean that all processes are done at the same speed....

put it this way, why would banks have 5 tellers instead of 1 really quick worker Wink assuming this 1 worker is as good 5 of the other workers

hhhmmm it's really hard to explain why multi core is better coz you need some programming experience....

My point was to point out that your response from this post

has limitations,
go back and have a read of what i wrote, the reason why they're introducing more cpus onto the computer is to cut down work,

obiviously its called...being a "team player", and if you know the basic idea behind that, playing the games and finishing it is easier than a single member

Transistor pointed that out in the form of an analogue for you

but as Santa and Transistor pointed out, the applications that allows operations to be divided and processed by the CPUs arent easy, and its usually not available for home users anyway[/quote]

I own a Pentium 2 350 OCed to a P5 3.33 GHz, 900 gigs of RAM, 38 inch diamond-studded monitor, Logitech cordless mouse overclocked to receive transmissions from 80 feet away, Abit motherboard with all the fixens, and a custom case I built out of titanium and iron ore.

Ic, p2 is one core and p5 or pentium d is dual core, did you put a apple seed there and imagine its another core?...off course he is making a joke. Shame to used Abit mobo thought....

Its not a shame to have an Abit motherboard. Their current models are nothing to write home about, but their Nforce 2 motherboards were very good - namely the Abit NF7-S was one of the best performing and feature packed Athlon XP motherbiard

True, back then I use Abit mobo for my AMD Athlon XP, Nforce2 chip as well. But I think he is talk about a P2

cause i knew =P
its very unlikely that someone would OC their CPUs that high to what it actually can support; plus the normal heat sink would've been totally slaughtered at those speeds due to the extreme indued temperatures =P

p.s i personally would stay away from Abit MBs and just stick with the good old gigabyte *thumbs up*

yeah gigabyte and asus sounds good to me, well... i've got asus in my desktop and it's been working really well, no major dramas at all

except the stupid capacitors which are placed really close to the hard-drive mounts of the case, which made me accidently snapped one of the capacitors X( , but i managed to buy a replacement capacitor and solder it back on Smile yay! saved like hundreds of bucks from buying a new system hehe

and some others like power supply, but that's about it really, i'll go for another asus mobo for my next system whenever it will be, i dun play lots of games (Except chess or sudoku online :p) so yeah won't be needing a new one in the near future

My PC's a coupla years old but it's had a few upgrades:

-P4 3.0GHZ with HT
-512MB DDR400mhz RAM x2 (1gb)
-80GB HDD (need upgrade now!!!)
-nVidia GeForce 6800GT 256mb
-Pioneer 8x single layer DVD writer (upgrade needed)
-Logitech MX500 optical mouse (a little bit jumpy now possibly due to me throwing it around the room when losing in CS Razz)

Thats most of the important stuff. I might get another 200GB external HDD, but after that, i probably won't upgrade it anymore, might as well get a new PC since the mobo in this one is still AGP.
