I play guitar. Sure you can't play bass and treble at the same time (makes everything you play sound half-baked), but it's portable!

keyboards of anykind are usually not portable. if they are, they are really big

if its one of those new foldable ones from yamaha, then its not going to be very comfortable to play with.

i wish you could fold a piano up some how and put it in your bag.

The guitar is an excellent instrument to learn in that it can be self-taught relatively easily in comparison to other instruments. There's a wide variety of excellent websites available, and tabs are free and simple to find.

Great idea CCJc, reminds me of how my music teacher bought a $4000 Baritone Sax for an ickle yr 9 student with the school's fundings (he got permission too)... Confused

I think my teacher and the principal must have been drunk when he made the order.

I just thought of something, schools sometimes really want to sell their instruments and get better ones.

You could just buy them dirt cheap and have a go at it, and see if you're going to seriously pick up violin. It'd be a waste of investment as a hobby or as a professional career later on to set it aside and pick up dust Wink

Its like how my dad told me, that if i was to get any car the first time, you should get anything but a brand new car, that way you can bump it here and there until you fully know how to use it properly Laughing

that would be the most horrible way to learn an instrument ><!!

Learning the basics is very important (particularly for a violin haha). :O and you can easily stuff that up by not havin lessons

If you just wanna try things out, you could rent something.

Otherwise... just get a beginners violin Very Happy

they're not expensive.

But yeh. I picked up the violin this year and .. hehe didn't dare do anything until i got my first lesson.

my school doesnt have any stringed orcestral instruments...i dont think i know anyone in my school that even plays one...

rock dominates at my school lol

it would be good to hire one...but where...thats close...

also, kouri - i learnt the flute mainly all alone and i play alright...just the flute i got now (off ebay, damn false advertising) is really bodgy...lol, which is why i am so cautious about buying a violin...

sure violin will have some fingering problems...might buy a book for that kind of thing. cant afford another extra-curricular activity this year haha.
i reckon i can learn a little by ear. (yeah i know, orchestral strings are different from woodwinds where you just have fingerings to remember)
but i should be able to get somewhere alone =]

i was however thinking about buying a dirt cheap one as ccjc said, but its 150 bucks, still a lot to me hahaha, its new though. machine made one.

hehe true, most people dont even know what a clarinet is. my friend used to play it and he used to get "Hey whats that thing you're playing" all the time.

"AAAAAAAARGH ITS A CLARINET, A CLARINET !!!" he replies

i gotta say i like the saxaphone better.

Also, has anyone ever played (or tried) a reed instrument? It feels so cool when you blow into it!!! (and making a sound of course) the reed goes BZZZ!!! on your lips.

why not start off recreationally just for now, like re-learn easy skills. like some scales (yes boring boring scales, but hey - they do help)
just like what i always tell my friend, scales are good to practice! (but hey, their fun when you can play them really really really fast.)

Lol theres 1 other bassist other than me... yay.
I play a 6 string abss though and ppl r laways like whats the dif between that and a guitar, but there is a big difference (different string tunings, thinckness, scale length, and approach to playing). I get lessons off a mad jazz bassist, who is supposedly the best jazz bassist in australia. Its mad though i dont play bass on the bass guitar i play solo in the bass. Hah and i performed solo peices in front of my school a few times. They probably dont like it but its not like they boo so i dont care. Everyone should play there instrument to there school jsut to piss off the damn rockers and rappers lol

Unlike most ppl *sigh* i play alto sax, and i dont think im getting nowhere (as in playing in concerts, that sorta thing) with my alto sax so i sorta abandoned it around 2 months ago. Plus playing anime music on a sax doesnt sound as good as on a piano. I also play a bit of piano and guitar.

PS: If there are any sax players on this forum and like jazz i recommend you to listen to the likes of the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Piano, Bass Guitar (teaching myself), and Vocals.

Going to pick up Guitar (acoustic and semi-acoustic) and teach myself that as well.

I mainly range from all but I have an affinity for for forms of Jazz, Blues, Bossa, Flamenco, Latin and R 'n' B.

Saving money up to buy me an electric piano - most likely a Yamaha or an old second hand Fender Rhodes from overseas..mmmm.
