I don't know about what you all think, but I know a lot of people i know thought that FFVII was the best...but i just don't see what made it so great - and they can never seem to explain it to me. Yes I have played it and i thought it was good, but not the best in the FF series...

thoughts?

i'ld say that the storyline was definately the best with all the extra twists and stuff, the plot was original. (except for the overall theme of "hero save the world", but its pretty much like that for most rpgs)

but i like the music from ffviii the most. XD

ffviii would probably rank 2 along (tied) with FFviii for enjoyment levels.

i'd say it's the most impressive (some people argue it's FFVI) because back in the days of cartridge games (Super nintendo) the graphics.... hey we didn't have any 3D at all, then when square released FFVII all of us went "wow, that's so cool Razz" of courseif you play FFX first then u'll probably reckon FFVII doesn't have much impression

but for me the story line is really good, FFVI is also really good

I think it depends on personal taste
For me, it's the best because I took a liking to the characters/story/music more then the other FF games. (heh still think the battle theme rips all others)
It was also the first to make the transition from lil snes
That contributes I guess

I would've said that FFVII's story is its most determining factor. It consists of many, many ideas that link together so well. It starts big and ends even bigger (unlike, say, FFVIII). It also has probably the most popular, badass villain the gaming world has seen...

I say all that and it's still not my favourite FF...

Lolz i know its dangerous territory...but i'm just curious. I get the whole FFVII being like a breakthrough in terms of graphics...but i didn't think the plot was anymore twisty than FFX...unless i was just too young at the time when i played it to realise.

But oh well, each to their own i guess...

too young? hahaha dun say that, making us the oldies feel really really old :p , basically with the plot, in FFX the guy is dead (but u'll get to see him again) but in FF7 the girl died tragically and it was so disturbing for most fans and los of them started onlie petition for square to modify the game haha and this was back when dial-up was not even 56kbps fast! hang on a sec, yeah... that was a while ago hehe

even older generation than us still prefer FF1 because it was the first ever breakthrough in RPG type game

trivia: guess why they have the dodgy name "final fantasy"? Razz i mean if it's final then it's supposed to be finished not contiuing on to 13 series already haha (joking)

answers coming up next Razz

I know the answer!!! I saw this clip where there was an interview with the creator (dont even remember his name) and he stated why he named it final fantasy
Name ses it all! He was really stressed out/depressed at the time I think too...
Am I right?Smile

Yeah it was meant to be his last game and then it was so successful he just kept on making them.

Well i didn't mean that i'm still young and played it uber recently...but i played it like 4 years about when i was 13...so maybe i wasn't so young hahaha

FF7 was the last game that had the most simple battle teachniques and abilities and especially viewing the summon effects...

After that, the series became difficult in quickly understanding how to combine what with what to level up, it just became total bs, and the summons just had too many flashes in them which strained the eyes a bit

i think FF7 and 9 fitted nicely for the younger audience, especial when you controlled the characters. For FF8 and 10, people rank like skinny stick characters :S

FFVII is overrated.
FFT is much better. So is FFVI.

I'd agree if the translation wasn't that shabby, although FFVI and FFIV rank among my favourites in the series, with VII maybe in third/fourth (should I put Tactics somewhere) place?

And in my opinion, FINAL FANTASY VIII WAS A TRAVESTY.

...There, I said it.

The characters and music make FFVII my all time favourite. Losing Aeris was such a shock and even now when I play again I keep a save file from before she dies. So I always have her. I'm so lame.

I also adore FFIX. Just something about it (Custimization sucked tho).

i can never pick THE best FF game, all i know is, the top three upper echelon ones are: FFIV, FFVI & FFVII

my personal fav's prob FFIV though, just for that incredible score alone

as for the other games...

FFI isn't really worth playing, but still good just for bragging rights
FFV had a great job system, story wasn't that good
FFVIII gets hated on, but i thought it was great
FFIX gets hated on, i thought it was great too, just not very memorable
FFX is imo overrated
FFX-2 IS SO UNDERRATED!! ok the story kind of sucked but the battle system and the job system was a lot of fun

havent' played III & XI

FF Tactics is awesome!! (although quite difficult...i still haven't finished it)
FF Tactics Advance.....very lame (besides the combat)...god i hated the stupid kids in that game

i would have to say that a couple of things make it a great game to me, but again, a few games fall into the same category for the same reasons.

1) The music... it really matched the story and the characters and i found it able to draw me in more

2) the story and depth of gameplay.... fighting all the weapons was great, but when my mates fought similar things in the later series, they did not seem to be that impressed or challenged, ( i cannot confirm because i never fought ulitma weapon on the others nor know if he was in all, or just FFVIII). the chocobo things and all, final weapons, summon materia etc. ... just was fun to do everything

3) The battle system and limit breaks!!! Getting all of Aeris limit breaks SmileSmile and then losing her.

Otherwise i would say that two other games fall into allthose exact points. My fav ---- Chrono Trigger... am still impressed how a little low level graphic sprite can have as much impact as a 3d /Cg sequence. I would happily love to see an anime of the whole chrono trigger story or a book... would be a brilliant novel. And FFX which i honestly think had a lot of the same great points. All were well done!!! Cannot think of any other characters where an emotional tie is made to a cartoon character (maybe chrono crusade as well there, the anime not manga)

ummm, all i can think of

but what do we mean when we say "best"?

best story? best fighting system? best magic system?

Best story is arguable by many to be FFVI and FFVII. But FFVI seems to take the trophy in many cases due to the incredible depth of the story.

I like to think that after FF6, comes FF7, FF10 then FF8.

People's favorite FFs are usualy bias to which one introduced them to the series. My first FF was X and that is by far my favorite with game clock at 150 hours+. Only beaten by Pokemon silver, 260 hours (gotta catch em all).

To me FFX had the best story. When I played VII, Barret summed it up best for me halfway through the game with "I've been here since the begining and I still don't know what's going on!" Albeit VII's story comes close to X.

I will never understand why alot of people have a vandetta against X. Sure some of the voice actors weren't that great, the sphere grid was time consuming to level up and the ATB was gone, but every FF game has it's flaws. VII's inconsistent art style, VIII's junction system, IX's forth disk.

What I'd really like to hear though is why VI is so great? I've played it and the story isn't that good and Kefka is one of the most unintimidating villians I've encountered. The story is nothing more than the age old Rebels Vs Empire theme with Espers and magic thrown in to some extent. So come at me VI fans.

Man I don't even know where I stand anymore. But here's my list just for kicks judging from the amount of fond memories. X,IX,VII,IV,VIII,II,VI,I (have not played III, V (I actualy have it on PSone, I'm really very sorry, prehaps someone can motive me into playing it?) and XI)
