I've seen these softwares before, my cousin actually used it when he mixed music together

Note:
Music manipulation as a wave file recorded straight from audio stream isnot easy to manipulate
By that I mean, changing its pitch sound

You'll pretty much have two ways of getting the correct pitches,
1. get someone more experienced than you to tell the difference
or
2. get the computer to generate an accurate pitch of any particular "sound" you would like to hear

I could be totally wrong, but check them out, researching about this is for your to explore =]

Mostly this is generated through using a MIDI, you think of it as a file thats just has tunes stored, but with no actual waves, hence the small size. Your computer just simply runs the file through a synethiser playing whatever tones was stored

Does anyone have any suggestions for Notepad software?

Like I know there's FinaleNotepad 2005 etc, but my mother board is stuffed and so my midi device doesn't work. Anyoen got a program where the preview or sound is actually, wav sound or somethingg?

you dont mean the microsoft text notepad do you?

if you want to analyze any particular sound waves, use nero wave editor

If you have a mac and a keyboard... GarageBand is pretty good... like say if you need to compose a song for a video assignment it will do you good.

I composed a song in a night. Go me! ^_^ just for fun..... It'll be on my website.. (once I fix it up which will be... oh another year or so... lol.)

At uni we use ProTools. It has a lot of errors though... and most of it is plug-in related errors... it also needs an Mbox which is about another $1000... so only think about it if you're uber serious about sound... I'm not. kwahaha.....

some lecturers in my uni uses mac because it's more secure in some ways, less virus and worms to worry about. Plus it just looks cool *drolls*

Finale and Sibelius are the two main companies that compete by ripping each other to shreds in order to dominate in market share. Hal Leonard supposedly uses Finale (which was also used to score Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, among many other notable films).

Pro Tools and GigaStudio are also widely used by professionals. The up side of a Mac is Logic, as GarageBand isn't a professional program, to my knowledge..

Anvil Studio is a free piano-orientated sequencer/composer that lacks many features. However, it's popular for its...lack of cost. Finale Notepad contains an 8-stave limit, but is far better for notation purposes. However, it does not support MIDI exporting, which renders it almost useless, in my opinion.

FL Studio 6.0 came out recently. I don't know how it compares with some of the other programs, such as Finale, but it's easy to use, has cool effects, and the sound quality has improved greatly. Just make sure you download some good soundfonts.

I personally recommend Finale and Sibelius for Notation, and for mixing I'm currently using Fruity Loops and Cubase for making loops and then importing them into Acid DJ, even though I can do all that in either Fruity Loops, but I just find it better this way.

(No, I didn't buy all those programs. Finale and Sibelius belongs to my music teacher coz he's rich and I've got cracked Fruity Loops and Acid DJ. And yes, now that you know, I'll just wait for someone to sue me.)

Hahaha! I'm not that rich! Most of the gear I use is at school, some Roland midi keyboard, old though... But yeah, mix some songs for fun a while back. Was for school too, assessment tasks, that's where the notation comes in... It was weird how I had to teach the teacher how to use Sibelius, and was forced to submit an electronic piece as notation... Damn was that hell!

Sibelius and Finale are quite easy to use believe it or not! Once you get the hang of the shortcut keys that is. With Sibelius, you can actually input the notes in via your normal keyboard. Eg. G would be 'middle C', H would be 'A', J would be 'B' etc. or something like that and you have your sharps and flats in between Eg. Y -> G#, U -> A# etc. And a bunch of other keys to set the duration, rests and so on. But if I remember correctly, Finale wasn't as user friendly...
