Some people work part time - one or two days a week.
I worked second semester, first year. Uni didnt go so well, not because I worked, but because I lost a lot of motivation.

I had ~21 contact hours (BSci, physics, biology, chemistry, maths, +3hr labs for each science unit).

Still managed to work two days, 8 hours a day. Woohoo me. The money really comes in handy so you dont have to starve and can actually afford things.

I would presume working is a prerequisite for having a girlfriend or boyfriend at uni. I work for myself. Mwuah, moneyy...

Everyone has to work out their own balance. Depends how good you are at procrastinating. I am a master of avoiding homework, so a job for me, in anything higher than a casual position would not be a good idea Rolling Eyes

I'm doing a combined degree (Arts/Education), studying 2 languages at an intermediate level, going to TAFE 2 nights a week, studying 6th grade theory and AMus for piano on top of tutoring kids and helping out at my parent's restaurant. There are many more things that I want and and plan to learn, but frankly I can't fit them into my life, timewise and moneywise.

Uni's not exactly a bludge and I'm a little upset that I have no time for an actual life at the moment, but this is something that I've decided myself. Life is short and there's alot I want to learn and accomplish (especially before I get too old to be able to survive on an average of 5 hours sleep a night. Wink

) so I don't intend to waste any time dawdling.

Besides, my parents would probably disown me if I decided not to attend uni. Not that I would ever seriously consider that option since the whole "Ambitious Asian Dream"(you know, entrance into opportunity class->selective school/scholarship at an elite private school->"law/med/commerce/anything remotely related to either of the three" uni degree->a very cushy and steady job that will allow your parents to regularly jet back to Asia or pay off all their MahJong debts->meet an equally financially capable(or for women, perhaps, even more capable) good, clean, wholesome Asian partner who you marry and then have several clever, polite and respectful Asian children with) has been so completely ingrained into my entire existence that I'm incapable of imagining a life without first spending a couple of years "uni'ing it".

Any type of learning is fun as long as you keep things in perspective. Try to think of learning as a joy, not a burden, nor as something that must be endured, as a means to an end, in order to obtain a certain qualification. I'm not saying that assessments are irrelevant, but don't just learn things mechanically (because you know writing down a certain sentence, which to you is utterly meaningless, will score you brownie points) without actually learning the reasoning behind it.

Else, you'll just lose the motivation and end up hating your course and by extension, your chosen career path, wearing a frown across your face each day as you set about doing the same bland, monotonous actions for the rest of your life (surest way to get wrinkles).

For those HSC'ing/VCE'ing it, my advice is to not put yourself into a social lockdown mode, refusing all contact with friends and discontinuing any sort of activity you reguarly participate in outside of school.

As one very hip and happening 50'ish deputy principal said to me once, "if you have no life now, you won't have one to go back to after the HSC (VCE)".

Of course, this does not mean you should 'partay on!' till the wee hours of the morning every single night between now and the HSC/VCE. Moderation, as always, guys, is the key.

Well, that's all from me today. I wish you all luck in (of course!) your studies and careers, but more importantly in life; in the things that really count. There is no cumulative score for happiness, so don't get too hung up with school/uni marks.

I'm still a young 20...and healthy, I hope. But being a passive smoker does me no favors at all. My skin is a lot worse than it was before. It doesn't look at all healthy.
