No not really...i mean, the whole point of a soundtrack is to compliment the film so i think if you watch the movie and hear the music and the way it goes with what you're watching, it enhances the experience and your connection with the music imo.

But i have liked an OST without having seen the film, but i usually tend to like it more after watching.

yeah i agreed with you elatin, sometime when we listen to the movie OST,we might started visualised the touching or interesting moment in the movie or anime too! picture and music are destinated to be together just like what eminence is doing now by including picture into their performance.

Movie OST faves:

• Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (Legendary Nobuo Uematsu)
• Memoirs of a Geisha (John Williams did it...*nudge-nudge*
• Lion King OST and Pirates of the Carribean 2 (Hans Zimmer is my hero!)

...that's all I can think of.

Anything by Ennio Morricone (I love his work, excellent in many ways), yes that means:

The Man with No Name Trilogy:
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Cinema Paradiso
The Mission
Once Upon A Time In The West
The Untouchables

Other movie OST:
Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Braveheart
Gladiator
STAR WARS (I mean, come on it's by John Williams and everybody knows the Imperial March Theme)
Indiana Jones Trilogy
M*A*S*H* The Movie (Yes, the vocal song Suicide Is Painless by Johnny Mandel is great)
The Deer Hunter (Cavatina by John Williams - A guitarist, the instrumental is just perfect. Gentle, and subtle yet somewhat sad at the same time.)

That's all for now.

Yes, I know it is a different John Williams. I said "Cavatina by John Williams (Australian composer) - A guitarist" Great movie don't ye think? Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken. *drools*

I actually disagree, because I absolutely LOVE the OST of Princess Mononoke, but still have yet to see it. I appreciate it because I'm a musician, and that OST really is beautifully written, the swells of the pieces are so heart wrenching!
I must confess that I found some of the footage at ANIF06 distracted from the music, rather that adding to it. I remember there was an incident when people laughed at the footage, when it had nothing to do with the music being played. That was a bit annoying. But overall, I do agree that modern day young audiences need footage to keep them interested, because otherwise they might fall asleep during a symphonic orchestral concert.

^ I remember people laughing when the Katamri Damacy footage was shown Smile

However that's completely acceptable... I believe the encore was supposed to get people to lighten up *just* a bit, and also to leave the concert on a happy/ boppy vibe which is exactly what it created ^^ Besides, Katamari is quite a ridiculous game and deserves a giggle or two.

^ Yes Katamari was ridiculous, I was sitting next to a friend of mine and he had the most confused expression ever. But hey, the music was great.

Yeah I love the music from princess mononoke and still haven't seen it either.
Actually much of joe hisaishi's pieces, which i listened to, i haven't seen the miziyaki film until after.
Even for the final fantasy series, i started listening to the music without touching the game.

Anime Mai Hime, was okay, but what really stuck was the music. Yuki Kajiura is so gooood. There was some song from Tsubasa Chronicle, which i heard was a crappy anime, but the music is really great. I remember last year (2005) eminence played "Believe" - It was the first time I heard it and I was blown away.

Anyway next time if possible, syncing scenes with the music would be much better and certainly enhance the music experience, as well as a higher understanding of what it was written for.

That's quite true; most would agree that the true test of a soundtrack is its ability to stand alone, stripped of the video that accompanies it. However, I have found that on several occasions, weaker films and games are slightly ruined by musical spoilers.

A prime example of this is Final Fantasy VII, whose music I listened to long before beginning to play the game - which sucked. I appoint the the majority of the blame to my having listened to the soundtrack first...oh, and being fed far too many spoilers.

Regarding film scores, that of Superman Returns was simply terrible. I listened to the main theme before watching the movie, and it was horrible. It was a relatively sound composition (ho ho ho), but it reeked of plagiarism from Star Wars and Indiana Jones. If I had viewed the film first, it most likely would have fit perfectly with the video, instead of appearing to be a cheap and uninteresting rip-off of more prominent movie themes.

I reckon Eminence should play more of that type of music, coz its fun and light hearted more than anything. Plus, dont get me wrong or anything, i notice ppl eventually become sorta restless listening to slow anime music through the course of the concert. Confused Not me of course, i can listen for hours and hours Very Happy . oooo! they should play music from 'Wolfs Rain', im not sure if anyone's heard of that anime but it has damn good music.

in the latest concert...Night in Fantasia 2006...the princess mononoke songs were one of the really touching pieces...so i really recommend you to watch it =) even though its a bit gruesome ^___^

your right...it was actuali quite hard for me to concentrate on the music and watching the video >< and i was getting all confused =/ but i duno i kinda hope they dont put up the video...but then agen people are more likely to fall asleep >< Confused

back to the topic...my few favourite movie OSTs are..

Howl's moving castle
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Initial D

i actuali dont remember any super great english movies OSTs =/ even i think lord of the rings would have some really great music.

Yes! Bryan Adams' voice is slightly irksome in some places, though.

Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas also has an excellent score, composed by Harry Gregson-Williams.

I like the instrumental tracks 12 and 13 as well. They remind me of The Lion King. It must be Hans Zimmer's influence.
