Im also at the moment researching small cars under 20k. Planning to get one by the financial year sales.
Both cars you have mentioned are prolly the best in the under 20k class. Both have pros and cons obviously.
Ill start with the Jazz.
The Jazz has enourmous space both in the front seats, back seats and boot. The Jazz's rear seats can uniformly fold down to produce a true flat boot space, which ends up being ridiculously huge. You might think all hatches can fold their seats down, but not as well as the Jazz. The new Jazz has quite a funky driver interior with radio buttons on the wheel, and also shift paddles behind the wheel in the automatic.
The Yaris is a more safe car to be in in case of an accident. Thats just the Toyota safety standard, which is one of the best in the car industry. In terms of power, they are quite similar. The jazz has around 81kw of power, and im sure the Yaris 5door is somewhere close. Spacewise im sure its ok for small asian people. So whats the pro? Well maintaining a Toyota is fairly cheap and easy. In fact, Toyota engines break down less than any other car. When it comes to your half yearly checkups, toyota servicing is the cheapest around.
That said, Honda on the other hand have some of the highest servicing costs around for a car that doesnt cost that much to begin with.
Im pretty sure the Jazz has a better fuel economy, but im sure the Yaris is still pretty good.
My summary, the Jazz will be more fun to drive around and pretend its a race car, but the Yaris is safer, reliable and cheaper to maintain.
EDIT:
After having reviewed them one more time, and assuming the Yaris YRX (top model), id have to vote Toyota Yaris YRX 5 door hatch. Safer and will cost you less in the long run and offers pretty much what the Honda does if not more. |

Indeed, the Yaris wins hands down.
I don't really like the front grid thing though , but I remember reading results from one of those independent car tests which had Honda Jazz ranked pretty low in terms of safety. |
