*EDIT - look at next post by me, further down the page*

Hi guys, im in the process of helping out with the pieces to be performed at a future event, and I want some opinions about a certain topic that’s been on my mind...

There are certain anime titles that are currently in Japan, and have not been released to an Australian audience yet. I am not really sure if Eminence should perform something that hasn't been released yet.

But then i thought, that most of anime fans in their teens watch unlicensed anime.

Ok, i'll tell you a title for example. 'The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi'. This anime is huugge in Japan, and i mean huge. Last week (or was it the week before??) 6 of the top 30 songs on the Japanese music charts were from Haruhi. Its original novels seem to have sold heaps (2nd to harry potter according to amazon japan) ..

So, Australia hasn't heard of it.. but then again, it has been unofficially released over the internet, and I’m sure that there is a fan base in Australia for it (or yet-to-be-released titles like it). The question is HOW big???

Bottom line, I want to know how many of you watch unlicensed anime (fansubbed, not released officially in Australia), and would you have a problem with Eminence playing a song from a popular, yet not released title.

If you guys can tell me what you think, i'll be able to make a better recommendation, and hopefully a better concert for you guys.

Demetri.

for me, it's alright to play music which hasnt been officially released in australia as long as the music is nice. =P I'm not sure about the rest of the ppl. Some ppl would only want to hear music which they've heard b4 either from game or anime. i have a friend who's just like that. He doesnt listen to a soundtrack which he hasnt played the game b4 even though it's a good soundtrack.

What better way to introduce the anime to an audience? Personally, I do watch fansubs and as-of-yet unlicensed anime, and bet that you would have a large portion of your audience doing the same.

Just my 2 cents. Wink

Every single anime watching person I know of (heaps and heaps) watch anime either downloaded from BT or maybe off Youtube every now and then, and they are ALL from fansubs.

Australia never gets anything until the rest of the world has already had it for 10 or so yrs. I dont even think Australia has titles like bleach and naruto officially released yet.

So personally I wouldnt mind, itll be good to be exposed to outside world for a change.

yes, i (when i have the time) watch quite a lot unofficially released animes
so i wouldn't have a problem with Eminence playing music from them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gRaE_RFD_U

so...is this what we can expect in the future? (for some reasons, the fingers don't really match the music)

We've performed music from Tsubasa Chronicle and Naruto in the past, no one seemed to be particularly annoyed. The main thing is that if people haven't seen the anime they are less likely to be as moved by the music since they don't know the story. If the music is good chances are people will like it, but it won't have the power that more popular stuff has. More importantly, it won't draw as many people in since they haven't heard of it.

It all depends on the anime title in question and the music selection.

Mmm, well lets take 'The Melancholy Of Suzumiya Haruhi' for example. Of course, its not that.. or is it? Nah it isn't... but maybe.

You should run a survey/poll here on what music from animes people would like to hear. So in essence it will be a popularity contest in which will reveal what pieces will move a majority of the audience. Whether the anime is licensed or not in Australia will not serve as a deciding factor in any way.

hth (hope that helps)

To play whats popular out there, you'd need to have a reliable source of data.
Otherwise its just trial and error, seeing what the audience likes and what not

Im not too sure how the nature of this data is going to be collected, but some place where its readily available but are just waiting to be processed are from the surveys. Which are still in the process of being collated (Sydney-side)

There lots of other methods, one thread has already been posted quite a while ago of a request list.

Not sure where that has gone to, if you do a search through the forums, or scroll through earlier by dates. If it hasnt already been removed.

I watch a fair bit of fansubbed anime as it comes out, before buying it. As long as you get permission to play the music I don't see a problem - especially if it's good music. The only thing is that there may not be all that many people who've heard of the music if it's so recent... the hardcore fans are all well and good but I'm not sure if there are enough to fill the town hall 4 times....

honestly, who actually buys anime these days? $30 for a volume that contains only 3-4 episodes =/. i rkn it's absolutely okay to play peices from anime that hasn't come out on dvd yet. Eminenece should just go ahead with it.

If the OST of the anime is good, it does not concern me a bit whether I have seen the anime or not.
After hearing some random OSTs, I actaully tried and look for the anime of the OST. So I guess it is also a good way to introduce new anime(s) to the audience.

I think I know a better to question to ask...

How would you feel about songs that aren't usually for orchestra, being playing by an orchestra (or piano)???

An example is most opening / ending songs from anime series. They're usually not intended for orchestra's (or piano) and takes more effort to compile than usual scores. BUT i have a chance to get some of these arranged for orchestra / piano... So would everyone freak out, in a bad way??

If they can be transcribed well, would you enjoy it just as much as a piece that hasn't been changed from its original context (like your usual Final Fantasy / ghibli song)?

Its always up to the public... Its also my last post on the subject.

I thought that Eminence have an arranger - whose job is to arrange music - for thoses instruments?
I dont think thatll be a problem though.

One thing i do want to say is that if it is music not originally for orch, then it needs to be orchestrated pretty well. But i think its been done before, so.. i guess. Not a problem? the music is generally pretty good, at previous concerts

Personaly, I love adventurous tracks (not originaly orchestrated). It gives uniqueness to the night and it blows your mind.

Katamari on the Rock from ANiF06 was awesome. And though I havn't heard it, I would immagine Super Mario would have been excellent too.

I think that's a great idea too. To have some anime Openings and Closings rearranged for an orchestra.

I would wait for a next concert series to play unlicensed anime music, unless the anime has been around for a while.

My reasoning is that if the anime is new, then waiting for a while longer will allow for more people to become acquainted with the anime, thus a larger fan-base when you *do* play the music.
