| Is there a difference between an orchestra that calls itself a "philharmonic" orchestra and one that calls itself a "symphony" orchestra? No. They're exactly the same kind of orchestra; they have the same makeup and they play the same kinds of music. (Both words have Greek roots, too: philharmonic is from the Greek word for "music-loving," and symphony is from the word for "sounding together.") The only difference is that symphony orchestra can also be used as a generic term, while philharmonic orchestra only occurs as part of a proper name. It's correct to say that the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra is a symphony orchestra, for example, but you wouldn't say that the National Symphony Orchestra is a "philharmonic orchestra." Basically, orchestras pick their names because they like the way they sound, and some orchestras, like the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, have avoided the "Symphony" versus "Philharmonic" issue completely.

I think I will marry Google.

Touche.
I thought I'd ask here since this is the forum of an orchestra.
So any particular reason why you didnt go for the philharmonic, or did you just agree on symphony? _________________

Ah I wasn't trying to annoy you, I just didn't know myself, so I didn't want to wait for an answer. I'd say what the quote did, sounds better. I mean 'Eminence Philharmonic Orchestra' sounds a bit weird, but maybe I'm just used to 'symphony'.
I suppose we'll have to wait for -=SeRaPH=- on this one. _________________

lol
Fair enough.
Nephtis: i'm partly at fault there - should have searched atleast a bit.
It might just be me, but I get the feeling philharmonic is used a fair bit for those more well known orchestras out there.
London Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic. Symphony doesnt have that "oompf" in it..
I might need to get off those drugs.. _________________

Drugs are good, they help the pain. Oh, and don't feel bad about searching, Google is my best friend in the whole world.

yeah you're right "philharmonic" does sound having more of those "technical weight" in it instead of just symphony, how hey i think eminence's name is good. To be honest i mistook the name with the band eminecence (sorry for the spelling), if somebody's gonna ask me to spell eminence philharmonic orchestra, then i'll probably misspell at least 2 of the words :p, but anyway sounds cool actually |

I need to catch a cold or something. I need some tablets that make me drowsy because lately I've been sleeping in the wee hours of the morning.
"eminence philharmonic orchestra" sounds more sophisticated the more I say it [in my head]. _________________

You need sleep.
Philharmonic... makes me think of choirs, opera singers and organs.
The absolute classical type.
Symphony sounds more fresh and young. Flexible. |
